NBA Veteran Arrested For Felony Fraud Over Alleged Casino Debt

  • Marcus Morris Sr. was arrested on Sunday for felony fraud regarding an unpaid casino debt.
  • A legal representative for Morris claims the arrest stems back to an outstanding casino marker at an undisclosed Las Vegas casino.
  • He was held without bond at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, Florida.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – NBA veteran Marcus Morris Sr. got arrested on Sunday for allegedly using a fraudulent check at a casino, according to online records. He was arrested in Florida but the incident stems from an unnamed Las Vegas Casino.

While online booking records claim Morris used a fraudulent check with insufficient funds, that’s actually not the case. According to NRS 205.130 of Nevada law, an unpaid casino balance over $1,200 is treated similarly to a fraudulent check and caused the confusion surrounding Morris’s arrest.

“…When the person has insufficient money, property or credit with the drawee of the instrument to pay it in full upon its presentation, is guilty of a misdemeanor. If that instrument, or a series of instruments passed in the State during a period of 90 days, is in the amount of $1,200 or more, the person is guilty of a category D felony and shall be punished as provided in NRS 193.130.”

Morris’s Agent Claims Outstanding Casino Balance Caused Arrest

Failing to repay a casino debt is considered fraud in Nevada, explaining why many other news outlets claimed Morris committed fraud. Morris’s agent Yony Noy went to X to defend his client, calling the arrest “insanity” and citing an outstanding casino marker as the reason for arrest.

Noy explicitly stated that Morris was arrested for the outstanding charge and not for using a fraudulent check or having an insufficient balance. Morris is best known at USA online gambling sites for his 2019-2020 season with the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers where he averaged 19.6 points per game.
